Eat tasty sashimi for ever
Science of overfishing prevention. Suisan Shigengaku
We want to continue eating delicious sashimi forever. To achieve this, we must continue the sustainable use of fisheries resources. In the Matsuishi Laboratory, we are studying Suisan Shigengaku or fisheries resource science, which involves research on the prevention of overfishing. Here is an introduction to some of the research conducted in the Matsuishi Laboratory.
Count
Knowing the number of fish in the sea is the first step in preventing overfishing. The Matsuishi Laboratory is researching methods for estimating the abundance and population from fisheries statistics compiled by the national and prefectural governments and market vouchers. Currently, the mainstream method is to conduct a census to determine the age of each fish and predict future changes in numbers (cohort analysis). Still, it is very time-consuming to determine the age. The Matsuishi Laboratory has developed a simpler method to determine the number of fish using body length and weight. They are also investigating the abundance of various fish species, including cetaceans.
Find out
Fisheries resources include a wide variety of species. Fisheries resources include not only fish but also squid, octopus, shellfish, seaweed and cetaceans. Each resource has its special characteristics. For example, more parents do not necessarily mean more offspring depending on the resource. Sometimes the offspring compete with each other for the limited food available and do not survive. By studying how many offspring survive when there are a certain number of parents (reproductive relationships), it is possible to make appropriate policy decisions. Studying the age and growth of the fish is also important for characterising the stock. Studying the characteristics of fish is important for preventing the overfishing of each stock.
Catch
Prohibiting fishing is not the only way to prevent overfishing. If fishing is banned, it is impossible to eat tasty sashimi. The Matsuishi Laboratory is considering ways to protect the resource while continuing to catch fish without a fishing ban as much as possible. It is necessary to predict how fish should be caught so that overfishing is less likely to occur. As the increase or decrease of fish is uncertain and depends on the environment, it isn’t easy to make accurate predictions. However, by calculating the probability of overfishing occurring under different environmental conditions on a computer, it is possible to calculate the probability of overfishing when resource management is carried out, and fishing methods and catches are changed. The results of such research are used in the policy-making of fisheries management.
